Conspiracy, or just Stupidity?

I’ve been having a barrage of computer problems lately with my new laptop. Long story short in the end I had to reinstall the operating system, which is followed by reinstalling all of the drivers.

Drivers have to be installed in a particular order. I’m fairly computer literate, but I’m far from MSCE certified. When I put the disc of drivers in my machine I noticed two things. 1) There were no instructions as to what order to install the list of drivers, and 2) they were not in alphabetical (or any other discernable) order.

Since, they weren’t in alphabetical order I naturally assumed they were in the order in which they should be installed. Not-bloody-fucking-likely. After screwing up the drivers good and proper, I called the tech support line. I spent two hours on hold Saturday before I gave up. Their system kept misrouting my call to the wrong technician.

Finally, Sunday at 7:30 am I got through and everything is peachy now. Here is what I learned in the process.

1) My tech support contract ends May 19th. They remind you every time you call. For a ton of money I can extend the contract if I want to.

2) The first and most important driver to install is LAST on the list of drivers.

3) The driver that must be installed second appears third on the list of drivers.

SB is convinced that the software company is in cahoots with tech support to force me to call and ask stupid questions like “Which driver must I install first?” just so I might consider paying for additional years of technical support. It would be supper easy to just list the stupid drivers in order, so I have to agree with her assessment. What do you think?

Conspiracy, or just stupidity?

BOTH!

My current job involves dealing with a lot of conspiracy and stupidity. I think that the people perpetrating the conspiracies have learned that it is beneficial to hire very stupid people.

I have a Macintosh. In fact, I have THREE Macs right now, They all run flawlessly. The few times I've needed tech support, I go online for a chat with Mac, or I pick up the phone. No problem. Sure. I DO feel superior. I also don't have stupid computer programs, vicious viruses or nightmares about Bill Gates.

Leave the dark side! Macs are the present and the future.

I live in a Blue State and drink Newcastle Brown Ale. I've been to England and cruised the canals. You can come to MY blog and crap on me now.

Why would I want to crap on you? For all I know you might actually be into that. You're not blogging from the bottom of an outhouse are you?

The wife is a Mac-lover. I have only one complaint with Macs. My laptop has only one and only one function; to play computer games. When the games I enjoy routinely come out for Mac, I'll make the switch.

Should I interpret your comment as a vote for 'conspiracy' or is it a copycat 'both' vote?

waterandwaves.blogspot.com deals with MY mundane interests, although we agree on the current state of affairs in the country today. Thanks for enjoying my previous ANON post. OY! I'm getting upset already, just thinking about HIM!

Nobody speaka de English anymore - first problem. Instructions for almost everything are created in other languages and that's why we get the effed up directions like : tack the open end of the sillinder and twist it big.

(Take the open end of the cylinder and screw it in till it won't turn) or just about anything other than what was written.

Macs - my friend just got a brand new G5? (10 thousand I think...) the biggest best one they make and it doesn't work...she can now make an appointment, must call in the morning to find if there are any openings...and lug this super heavy monster back to an Apple store-- 2 hour drive....

She also has had trouble with her brand new laptop...so, I'm not loving Macs as much as I once did.

MB, I just remembered that I met someone once who had a job writing instructions and user manuals for a variety of products. He didn't mention translations, but he did say he'd get diagrams and a written sketch of the instructions from the development department, but he didn't get the actual product to look at himself.

His example was writing the directions to program your tv using the remote, when he didn't have neither one in front of him.

Sylow, no wonder why I can't make that thing work worth a damn. I pick it up and presto! picture in a picture which makes me crazy..hate that feature and never use it.

My friend who wrote manuals worked for a Korean company...she would try to take the pigeon English and make it correct, but she never had the product in front of her either...Samsung I think...
